Low back pain is a problem of overuse rather than unavoidable degeneration due to aging. Life is movement: movement of the body in space as well as movement of the emotions and spirit. Movements are initiated from the lower back, the domain of the kidneys. Every time we get off a chair to do something the lower back is engaged. When we approach a mental task or struggle through emotional experience the energetics of the lower back is called into action. The prevalence of low back pain is symptomatic of a culture and lifestyle that continuously strives for accomplishments. Naturally, use increases with age. However, in my clinic I see many more younger patients with the problem. Body, mind, and spirit are one and indivisible. Spondylolisthesis, for instance, is a physical problem, but it is also a displacement of a person’s life efforts in relation to the true needs of the self.
